Individual and Self-Employed Tax Return Deadline

12 February, 2009 (18:32) | Personal Tax | By: Cecilia Leung

As tax time approach, and since I have nothing btter to do on the bus ride home, let me take this opportunity to remind you the tax deadline, and don’t forget to get the most tax refund you can!

Deadline for submitting you tax return to CRA are as follows:
Deadline for Individual: April 30, 2009
Deadline for Self-Employed: June 15, 2009

Deadline for all payment due if you owe any tax: April 30, 2009

Yes, that’s right. Even though you maybe self-employed, and don’t need to file until June, if you owe tax, you are still required to pay on or before April 30, otherwise interests and penalty will apply to you.

Hi Cecilia,

A quick question: I worked as self-employment since September 2008, paid expenses out of my pocket since then but no income till 2009. For the 2008 expense, should I claim it to my 2008 other income (not the self-employment) or I can claim to my 2009 self-employment income? I am in BC.

Thanks!

Wei

Hi Wei,

You should claim your 2008 expenses using T2125 form. This allow you to carry forward your 2008 expenses as a loss to future years. If you have filed your 2008 return already, you will need to file an adjustment for your personal income tax return for 2008.

Hope this help
Cecilia
